- 1 cup whole wheat flour- I used white whole wheat
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 6 ounces cold butter, cut in 1-inch chunks
- 1 egg
- ½ cup milk
- ½ cup chives, cut in ¼-inch pieces
Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set it aside.
Mix the flour, baking powder, salt, and garlic powder in a medium-sized bowl. Set this aside. In another, smaller bowl, mix the egg and milk with a fork to break up the egg, set this aside as well.
Cut the butter into ½-inch pieces (make sure the butter is chilled). Add this to your flour mixture. Then with a pastry cutter or 2 knives, work the butter into pea-sized pieces. Once it is broken up into smaller pieces, add the milk mixture and mix with a fork.
Drop 6 biscuits onto a parchment-lined baking sheet. Move the biscuits quickly to the preheated. Bake for 12-13 minutes. If you want, turn your oven to broil to give your biscuits the beautiful, golden brown color. Remove it from the oven and they are ready to serve.
While these biscuits are perfect just like they are, let me share a few other ideas in case you want to mix up flavors a bit.
- Add cheese- Let me recommend sharp cheddar, pepper jack, or even gruyere. 1 cup grated or in small cubes is all that is needed, to bring your biscuits to a new level.
- If you want to add some protein here, are a few ideas. Cubed ham is delicious with the chives, but so is cooked ground sausage. Jimmy Dean Hot is a family favorite. Cook the sausage, drain, then let it cool completely.
- Chives in this recipe are easily interchangeable with green onions as well.
